چکیده

This paper presents ongoing research in improvement of analytical tools for the characterization of rock mass structure from oriented borehole discontinuity data. Using automated multivariate cluster analysis and the “three dimensional stereonet” provides for fast and objective characterization of oriented core discontinuity data. Improvements to the CYL software include three new methods of cluster analysis, incorporation of roughness as well as orientation and spacing as variables, additional visualization modes, and an automated method to split the data set into different Geotechnical Mapping Units (GMU). In addition the program facilitates the selection of optimum drilling angle for boreholes.

Estimation of percolation flux from borehole temperature data at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.

Temperature data from the unsaturated zone (UZ) at Yucca Mountain are analyzed to estimate percolation-flux rates and overall heat flux. A multilayer, one-dimensional analytical solution is presented for determining percolation flux from temperature data. Case studies have shown that the analytical solution agrees very well with results from the numerical code, TOUGH2. The results of the analys...

Multivariate Clustering Analysis of Discontinuity Data: Implementation and Applications

This paper presents the results of ongoing research on the characterization of rock mass structure from discontinuity data. Multivariate clustering analysis represents a relatively recent development in characterizing the structure of rock masses. Multivariate clustering allows characterization of discontinuities into subsets according to multiple parameters, such as orientation, spacing, and r...

Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Seismoelectric Effects in Boreholes

In a fluid-saturated porous formation, an impinging seismic wave induces fluid motion. The motion of fluid relative to the rock frame generates an electric streaming current. This current produces electric and magnetic fields, which are called seismoelectric and seismomagnetic fields, respectively. When there is a fracture or a discontinuity, a radiating electromagnetic wave is also generated, ...

A programming method to estimate proximate parameters of coal beds from well-logging data using a sequential solving of linear equation systems

This paper presents an innovative solution for estimating the proximate parameters of coal beds from the well-logs. To implement the solution, the C# programming language was used. The data from four exploratory boreholes was used in a case study to express the method and determine its accuracy. Then two boreholes were selected as the reference, namely the boreholes with available well-logging ...

A boundary element analysis of crack-propagation mechanism of micro-cracks in rock-like specimens under a uniform normal tension

In this work, the mechanism for fracture of brittle substances such as rocks under a uniform normal tension is considered. The oriented straight micro-cracks are mostly created in all the polycrystalline materials resulting from the stress concentrations. The present work focuses on the interactions of the pre-existing micro-cracks, which can grow and propagate within a rock-like specimen. The ...
